The young fresh seed pods are edible and so are the seeds. Often eaten like sunflower seeds. The seeds are high in protein, can be snacked on like sunflower seeds and pressed for the oil. Some believe that it has anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and increase of mobility properties.

As the fruit dries the tail cracks open and splits into two hooked, claw-like halves. When the seed pods hardened they would turn black and were used in basketry by local Native Americans.
